Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As an English Teacher in a small Manhattan high school, I've recognized my students are largely visual learners. They comprehend and understand ideas and concepts best when they can create their own model. This means incorporating lots of hands-on projects and art-based activities.

For my juniors and seniors, being able to learn real life skills while having fun and being creative, is key.

In a Title I school, however, finding and funding the projects and craft materials is often challenging.

My Project

For this proposal, I am requesting a Cricut machine, vinyl, and accessories. The Cricut is a die-cut machine that cuts letters and shapes that then can be applied to T-shirts, tote bags, tumblers, and a million other products students can create for fundraising.

Students will learn valuable lessons in design, fundraising, and financial literacy.

The Cricut connects to a computer to cut out virtually any shape imaginable. Students will work together to design products to sell in order to raise funds for student activities. Through the process of creating and selling items, students will learn about pricing, profit margins, and supply and demand. This project will see students taking an active role in their education, while teaching them important life skills.

Not only will the products made help teach students about key financial literacy concepts, they will also help foster school pride.
