This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are middle schoolers at a Title I school in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York. My students come from diverse backgrounds and many from tough homes.

My students are motivated and eager to do well.

They carry a lot of stress from home which sometimes interferes with their ability to focus on doing their best work. Running track for many of my students provides them with the much needed escape that they need. It is not uncommon to hear students say that running brings them peace and helps them to feel alive!

My Project

Our track team enjoys running. Running allows them the opportunity to feel strong, committed, and to set goals for next time. By students being able to track their time for their runs, they will have clear information which will enable them to set running goals. Additionally, students have mentioned how having music while they run inspires them to push harder.

Having music on the go will allow for students to further lose themselves in their running along with allowing for a more fun and motivational practice.

As the weather gets colder and the streets get slippery, we will have to bring our running indoors and mix in workout videos, being able to connect a portable device to the projector will allow for these workouts to take place, keeping our students fit, and healthy all winter long.
