My Students

What better way to pass on the light of knowledge than through the gift of an eco-friendly beeswax candle?

I teach in an inner-city, urban public school where over 50% of the students qualify for free or reduced-priced lunches, the basic measurement of poverty.

My students come to the classroom burdened with problems from home, and saddled with the history of a spotty educational experience thus far. They often do not understand or appreciate the need for environmental conservation.

My Project

Your kind donation will provide my students with the materials needed to make their own beeswax candles, a preserved model of the bee life cycle to study, and raffia to make presents of their candles that they will then pass on to others. The preserved model is not consumable, so it will continue to provide year after year of instruction. I have already spoken with the horticulture teacher, and we are excitedly working on collaborative ideas with this project in mind.

By making their own candles, my students will be able to apply the knowledge that they learn in class to real-world applications of why this material is important.

Beeswax candles are far less polluting than petroleum-based wax candles, and are from a sustainable source that supports small-scale economies. With colony collapse disorder in the news, this is an excellent project to show how science is contemporary, and not just confined to the textbook or classroom.
