Making Distance Learning Meaningful for Dual Language Learners

Help me give my students the opportunity for hands-on learning in a virtual environment with math and science home kits including whiteboards, pencil boxes to house the kits, hand lenses, eyedroppers and other science supplies.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My dual language partner and I teach 40 energetic first grade students who come from diverse backgrounds and languages. Although they are faced with many challenges both at home and in the classroom, their curiosity and eagerness to learn helps them thrive at school. They enjoy engaging in creative and meaningful hands-on learning experiences.

Through our dual language immersion program, we work to help our students develop their academic potential in two languages, as well as develop their social skills to become active and supportive learners in their dual language classroom family.

Although our school is a Title I school with over 85% of our students in the low income, high poverty category, our students are excited to learn in two languages and they work very hard to be successful!

My Project

My class will start the year off virtually, so the math and science toolkit materials and supplies I am requesting will help ensure that students are receiving engaging and hands-on learning experiences. If we are able to transition back into the classroom, students will need to use these individualized toolkits so they can continue learning in a safe environment.

My students will love to use the whiteboards to solve math problems and use tools like the magnifiers, eye droppers, and tweezers to investigate like a scientist!

Our dual language learners are our future mathematicians and scientists!
