Making Discoveries and Connections Through Reading in Science!
My students need a subscription to Scholastic Science World Magazine to enhance their literacy skills while learning about new technologies, inventions, discoveries, and much more!
Our students live in the borough of Staten Island in New York City and learn in a public school that services 900 students from pre-kindergarten all the way up to eighth grade. Over a third of our students come from low-income households, and some of them come from military families. Many of the students I teach have a range of various disabilities and some are English Language Learners. These students are supported by various programs such as speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, ELL classes, guidance, etc. Our goal as a staff, and especially myself, is to reach as many children and try to bring out the best they can be and give them the best experiences to help them love school!
My Project
With a subscription to Science World magazine, my students will be exposed to exciting and new inventions, discoveries, technologies, animals, etc. through articles and images that will engage in reading non-fiction text. The content in these magazines directly support our science content in the classroom, so they will be receiving additional supplemental material that is interdisciplinary. They will be able to make connections to these images and articles, in hopes for the content to have more meaning. Which in turn will make it easier to remember and understand the content in which they are learning.
This subscription will help to enhance my students' reading comprehension/literacy skills, in addition to their knowledge of science.
With 12 various issues through the year, this subscription will have a positive impact in my science classroom all year long!
What makes this magazine even more amazing, is it comes with an online subscription with access to videos, activities, and worksheets that go along with the readings. The content is directly aligned with STEM and NGSS, which will encourage my students to think like scientists and engineers as its practiced in the real world!
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
