This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students get their breakfast at school each morning before they come to my class. Fuel in their bodies makes them ready to learn and start the day. The school serves free breakfast for 85% of the students and they get to the school early to eat their breakfast that they don’t get at home.
These students are 11- and 12-year-old boys and girls, growing, trying, experiencing, experimenting, challenging and ultimately becoming educated in my classroom.
My classes are all year so I can work with these students in depth with technology, get to know their strengths and weaknesses, and see their creativity develop as their experience with art increases.
They are in uniform and some kids have uniforms that fit and are clean and others have uniforms that are too big, too small and don't really look clean. The majority of kids are happy and energetic and ready to learn. Some students have trouble staying awake and staying focused.
My Project
This project is about creating lifelong readers. The project will give students the experience of writing and drawing pictures that go with their words. Students will create graphic novels with these Toon books that are examples for students to read before starting on their own graphic novels.
This project will introduce students to the pleasures of graphic novels while promoting visual literacy.
This is the first time taking a 10 week art class for these 6th graders, and for the majority of students the only time they will ever have the experience of taking an art class. A class emphasizing process not product.
Each student will get a blank book to write and illustrate the story they pre-write after reading the Toon graphic novels. The final step in the project will have them reading their graphic novels in front of a green screen. The pictures from the book will be photographed with an iPad and the pictures will be behind them as they are reading their graphic novel. They will learn how to use greenscreen by Doink to create their digital graphic novel combining their story and their artwork.
Students will be following the new national art standards by creating these digital graphic novels. For 6th graders to write a graphic novel over a 5-week time period requires the process be broken up into smaller steps. Writing, putting the words in a book, illustrating the words and then reading the book will each have lessons and due dates to keep students from being overwhelmed. The end results make it worth the extra work students put into making their graphic novels.
