Do you remember that moment when you connected to a character in a book and how important that connection was? For my students, just like myself, that connection is everything. My students are diverse in culture, language, ability, and home environment.
Their experiences and their background add to our classroom as they bring unique perspectives, new ideas, and their own truths to our discussions.
Many of my students lack the resources in their homes to foster inquiry, make connections, and acquire vital language skills. Despite these difficulties, these students and the school community are a family. It is evident the minute you walk into the school. It feels like home. These amazing students I have the great pleasure to teach make this school and our classroom feel welcome, safe, and positive.
My Project
Reading is a daily practice in our Language Arts classroom. My students and I read every day to help develop the language skills necessary for not only education, but a future after graduation. It is so important that my students find authors, characters, and new voices which resonate with their own, as well as discover new cultures and experiences to engage with.
Access to books is a great predictor of language acquisition and development.
It is important to have immediate access to engaging literature for our classroom so that my students will develop the skills they need for school and in their future careers. I also feel that it is important for them to find literature that they enjoy reading because if they enjoy it, they will continue to read on their own away from the classroom.
As a first year teacher, I am building our classroom library and discovering literature my students will make connections with. It is these connections which help them find their own voices and their own power. They also learn to empathize with characters and situations. Each of these skills that come from engaging with literature translate directly to their lives in the classroom, at home, and in their communities.
