Making Connections, One Button at a Time

Help me give my students a button maker to help them network and connect with other teams, sponsors, and fans!

My Project

As a FIRST Robotics competition team, buttons are one of the best ways for teams to get creative, show their team spirit, and bond with their community. Buttons have existed as a tradition in the FIRST Robotics community for many years, with our team having a tradition of buttons going back to the mid-1990s. Students exchange buttons to get to know other teams, show their team spirit by wearing their own team buttons, display their friendship with other teams by wearing buttons, and create button collections to show their excitement over the competitions they have traveled to and the people they have met. Teams also use buttons for networking by giving them out to current and potential sponsors as well as families and fans. Buttons are a great way to make a connection and are a major part of the FIRST experience.

Getting a second button maker will allow our team to make sure that we can create enough buttons to share with all of the students and spectators we meet at our events, as well as allowing kids in our community to design their own buttons at our Family STEAM Night.

Over the last three years since we got our first button maker through DonorsChoose, my students have harnessed their creativity to design and make custom buttons each year. They have used their buttons to make friends from teams from all over, even distributing thousands of buttons at the 2024 World Championships. Our team has won awards for our creativity and the spirit shown through our buttons, including the Spirit Award at the 2025 New England District Championships. We have also had the opportunity to show support to the LGBTQ+ community by creating special pride buttons and pronoun buttons to help foster inclusion at FIRST Robotics events.
