Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Music has many ways of connecting to reading and literacy. With very few resources, my students have had mostly kinesthetic music experiences. These books will help students explore fun ways that music can be used to increase literacy.
The 450 students of this urban school are almost entirely from low-income living situations.
They are in grades preschool through eighth. Nearly a quarter of the students are learning English as a new language, and the school has strong programs for students with autism and visual impairments. Three-quarters of the student population is Hispanic; the rest is African-American and White. The school features a world language program and a school culture that highly values its children. Even though the school is a regular public school, many of our students travel from various parts of the city to attend. The parents, teachers, and staff are committed to developing the whole child and give as much time and resources as they can to supplemental programs and activities. The majority of students graduate on time and attend selective-enrollment public high schools in the area. The only fine arts class students receive is their weekly music class.
My Project
My selection of books can be broken into three categories: song-stories that can be dramatized and performed, stories that give historical or artistic context to songs we learn, and stories that are visual and written representations of songs we learn. The books will be used from preschool through eighth grades. Students enjoy singing and playing songs during their weekly music class. Bringing books into the classroom will take their experiences one step further. To teach group cooperation and encourage creativity, books for dramatizing, such as "Shake Dem Halloween Bones," will allow the fifth grade to create a mini-musical and perform for younger children. Books such as "Night Boat to Freedom" that provide historical context will be used with older students as we study the double-meaning of spirituals. And books such as "Cheese" will provide a literacy link to a younger children's favorite song by printing the text of "The Farmer in the Dell."
Your donation to this project will add a new dimension of enjoyment and learning to students' music classes.
Because the students will have had joyful experiences with these songs and stories, they will be more excited about reading. Hopefully students will take this excitement back to their regular classroom and continue to grow as readers and writers. Additionally, the books will help create a print-rich environment - something that is essential for emerging literacy.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
