Making Connections Between Cultures Using Tales

My students need 26 books of folktales, myths, and legends from different cultures.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. M.'s classroom raised $249

My Students

Devdutt Pattanaik, mythologist and leadership consultant, said in his 2009 Ted Talk, "When you study [mythology], you realize that different people of the world have a different understanding of the world."

My third graders and I belong to an excellent magnet school.

Our school has a reputation for bringing out the best in students. We have high expectations and our students work hard to meet them. My third graders are curious and want to know more about the world, but have little opportunity to meet people outside of their community.

My Project

I want to introduce my third graders to other cultures by using mythology, legends, folktales, and tall tales. We will use the books to discuss how the tales reflect the values and beliefs of cultures, as well as strengthen reading skills and comprehension. I am creating two units using these tales. The first unit will focus on determining characters' traits and motivations. The second unit will focus on determining the author's message. The books will be used for lessons and for independent reading. I choose books that reflect the reading levels of my third graders.

With your donations, you will give my third graders an interesting and diverse selection of books.

You will give them new and exciting stories at levels that will challenge them without frustrating them. With your donations, you will give them insight into the wisdom and points of view of people from other cultures. You will help contribute to discussions that encourage my third graders to make connections and use higher order thinking skills. You will bring new worlds to my third graders.
