Making Concrete Comfy After Hurricane Harvey

My students need comfy pillows and rugs to make the concrete floors a little more enjoyable while reading in the library. They also need a charging station and headphones to listen to books on our iPads.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a low socioeconomic school, I want my kids to have the same opportunities as any other student. Our district offers free breakfast for all students and the majority of our students are on free/reduced lunch. Regardless of what they leave at home, they walk through the the school doors with smiles and enthusiasm to learn! I see the fire for learning in each and every student and I want to fuel that fire with fun new ways of learning.

My Project

The majority of our surrounding neighborhoods were destroyed during Hurricane Harvey and our school is still trying to recover. We want to provide the students with a safe place to escape their upside down lives at home. Even though we have concrete floors, holes in the ceiling, and missing cabinets and shelves, we are still here smiling and learning every day. The items we are asking for will help make our class library more comfy and cozy despite the concrete. We love to be on the floor learning hands on for every subject and these will be a fantastic addition to our class family. This is why a rug, bean bags, and other comfy seating options will make a huge difference. We are also requesting headphones and a charging station so the students can continue listening to books on iPads.
