Making Cents of Aquaculture

Help me give my students algae and brine shrimp cultures, timers, and calculators to increase financial literacy through aquaculture.

My Project

Aquatic studies students already know that good water quality is the foundation of coral health in a reef aquarium or propagation tank. They also know that they can stretch their budget by mixing their own synthetic saltwater and solutions to support the growth of coral skeleton. Students maintain our propagation tanks and need algae culture supplies and brine shrimp cysts to provide nutritious food to their tanks while they explore cycles in ecosystems.

My students need inexpensive calculators and timers to use around our active marine science classroom for calculating needed amounts of saltwater mix and additives, conducting water quality tests, keeping track of inventory, and figuring the unit cost when comparing supplies to purchase.

Spare batteries will keep the timers running. Now is a great time to provide more business training opportunities and responsibilities for my middle school students and increase financial literacy in my Aquatic Studies curriculum.
