Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are special because one, all kids are special and two, even though my students face challenges and find themselves to be statistics of poverty and single parent households, they come to school each day ready to learn and wanting to belong to a safe and loving environment. Every student in my classroom meets some kind of negative statistic but it is my hope and my mission to help my students use their disadvantages to make them stronger and fuel them through this journey of life.

My Project

A snowball fight, to introduce a reading lesson, was the catalyst to my students' ideas of creating a classroom of movement. After this activity they wanted to move all the time. The first thing we decided to do was visit a movement lab. Next, we made a wish list of things we wanted to have in our class for movement.

The items that I am requesting will help my students use movement to fuel their learning.

My students, particularly my boys, struggle with being able to focus and completing activities. So, the chair balls, shape shifters, desk-er-ciser, step balance, carpet touch me butterflies and the artic squeeze will provide and opportunity for my students to move while they are completing their activities. In particular, I will use the chair balls and desk-er-ciser at my small group table. This is where I work with a group of children. I facilitate their learning but the students teach, collaborate and learn from each other. These items will motivate the students to want to activate the higher level thinking strategies they need in order to be able to teach others what they have learned.

In my class, these items will be incorporated in our brain breaks. During our brain breaks students readily engage in movement and are taught that we move to make our brains healthier and ready for learning. As a result, these Items will teach my students about the importance of health and experience the fun of sports.

Currently, we use a movement program that helps us to incorporate about 60 minutes of movement each week. With the donation of these items each student will rotate items each day and will be able to participate in more than 60 minuets of movement every school day!
