Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year I will be teaching first grade, the year most of my students will learn how to read and write. It's my job to make this experience both powerful and meaningful.
Throughout the year my students will be writing many books. In order to celebrate their accomplishments, we will publish their books. In past years, I have observed the initial joy a child gets from using a stapler to bind their book. The first few times we publish, this small action means so much. But as the months go on and the stapler becomes just another tool they master, this book making loses its magic. And as the writing advances, and children's writing becomes longer, some students who struggle with writing lose their drive to keep trying.
I would love to be able to give children in my school the gift of book making with a book binding machine. By binding their books, children can appreciate the process and product writing can offer. Their writing will become a real book, something in which they can take pride, and bring home with that same pride. And for struggling students, for whom the writing process becomes a burden, a book binding machine will be an incentive for producing work that despite their difficulties, they can be proud of. These bound books will be more durable for use in the classroom libraries and will allow students to value their writing even more. Thanks for your consideration.
?In the case of good books, the point is not how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get through to you.?- Mortimer Adler
