My Students
My high school functional skills (SPED) students in Memphis are inquisitive, lively, eager learners. It is wonderful to see them in person. They are really happy to be in school working with their teachers and classmates.
My students amaze me everyday.
They are so unique in how they express themselves, how they learn, and how they use humor! Each of them have their own distinct personalities, and mannerisms. We laugh a lot. My students are so proud of themselves when they learn something new or try something they have never tried before. My assistants and I support each of them as they navigate learning, each with their own set of learning disabilities and IEP goals.
I see 45 students per day. These students are learning to change classes. They do not just stay in one room all day. I see some of my students 3 times or 4 class periods a day. Other students I only see for one class period.
My Project
My students are special needs/autistic high school students. We use a variety of curriculum designed for functional skills students. For example, we print materials/activities in color, laminate these, and bind them into individual student books and activity packets. We also use color pencils to color maps, matching activities, highlight notes, and create art work.
We are running out of ink for our classroom color printer!
We laminate materials for our books. We have a laminator, but we are out of the laminating pouches. Our electric pencil sharpener is broken; we need a replacement. Also, the students and I have discovered that color pencils really need a special sharpener.
These materials will help us continue to print and create our student books, keep our pencils sharpened, and allow us to continue coloring maps, pictures, take notes and more.
