Welcome to BES Music and the dynamic energy of children creating, performing, and responding to music. We are a dual language elementary with 425 students. I hope to infuse the music and learning opportunities of the students and staff with hands on, culturally authentic, and dynamic units of study. In my 36 years of teaching, I have used drum circles and percussion ensembles to teach elements of music and performance. In my first year here at Blix, I have encountered a lack of instruments available to support a World Music Drumming Curriculum.
The Word Music Drumming Curriculum is designed to engage students in multi-faceted music making experiences that align with the theoretical principals of West African, Caribbean, and Latin drumming and singing traditions.
The World Music Drumming Curriculum is comprised of 7 units of study with 33 sequential lessons, each building skills in listening, focus, teamwork, developing community, refining playing skills, and recognizing the value of respectful participation.
I am excited to provide this opportunity for playing together and helping students find their "groove". Drum circles create a very low language barrier and high level of engagement. Perfect for our dual language community and media/screen saturated students.
Primary Students will use the drums to "learn to play" by developing steady beat, listening, call and response, simple rhythms, and teamwork.
Intermediate students will use the drums to "play to learn" by building on musical elements to develop ensembles, respect, and musicianship.
