This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom has been 100% affected by the Coronavirus pandemic. In the heart of where it all started, we are located in East Harlem, New York (Manhattan). Our schools were abruptly closed, leaving both teachers and students ill equipped with the resources to continue our educational journey to the maximum level possible.
Distance Learning is constantly evolving and my students are trying to find ways to catch up.
Most of them having learning disabilities and/or being English language learners, the journey has been a rough one. By me not being by their side, my students are greatly struggling behind their screens. I am trying to make Distance Learning the best it can possibly be by utilizing more technology and finding creative ways to reach them.
My Project
Now that we are learning remotely through the summer months, I need to keep my students engaged and create long-lasting, colorful images to support them in learning Algebra from home. A color printer is something that I have never had the leisure of owning. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, I used to ask my principal if I can print things on his color printer in his office. While I did this sparingly because I did not want to bother him (and finish his toner), I felt that my students truly benefitted from the colorful posters I would create with trips, tricks and things to remember in our Algebra curriculum.
Being that we are learning from home, I felt the need and sense of urgency to create this project so that I can continue my practices of supporting my students EXACTLY the way I did when we were physically together in our school building.
My plan is to continue to print colorful posters for my students and create a mini-book for each of them. I will be working on this project as soon as this printer is funded. These mini-books will be my gift to my amazing students when school resumes in September. Their state exams were rescheduled for January 2021, so this would be a perfect little study guide, with a touch of love from their teacher.
