Making a Space for Learning: We Need a Classroom Makerspace

My students need duct tape, Legos, and other supplies to be used throughout the year for a number of Makerspace activities.

My Students

We are a Title I school, and many of our students face financial hardships. Our school is home to many students from several local housing projects. Our students come from a diverse range of backgrounds with a wide variety of ethnicities represented.

Despite the struggles that many of our students face at home, they come to school ready to learn.

We have many ELL (English Language Learners) students, a good Special Education program, and teachers that work hard to foster a sense of school community and inclusiveness. Our students are wonderful Preschool through 5th graders and work hard to be the best that they can be.

My Project

The duct tape, building materials, and other supplies will be used throughout the year for a number of Makerspace activities that will become a part of our classroom for the remainder of the year. Students will be able to explore their creative side through arts and crafts, as well as homemade technology.

By helping support this Makerspace movement, you will encourage creativity.

Education is continually asking students to find answers using formulaic processes, but the Makerspace movement is pushing students to be creative and think outside the box. Makerspaces encourage students to strive for new answers, create innovative solutions, and work collaboratively to explore interests and learn new skills.

Our students will learn perseverance, that it is okay to fail as long as you try, and the importance of working collaboratively as a team to solve problems. Students will learn that they are able to do much with few materials, and that they have great potential ahead of them. This project also helps the library continue to become a place of innovation, learning, and exploration of creative possibilities.
