My Students

Ecology, genetics, cells, and development are topics in biology that are constantly moving and dynamic. However, seeing these concepts in text and board notes makes them boring and static. We need a projector to 'liven' up the classroom.

My students are ninth graders from a public high school in New York City.

We are one of the few larger high schools left in the city with about 2,500 students. Most of our students are coming from poorer school districts in the borough. A lot of our students have a dislike towards science because of the difficult reading and vocabulary usually associated with it. I try to add memorable learning experiences to help them retain knowledge. I also feel these experiences will keep their attendance up as well as turn away from the idea that science is boring and impossible for them to master and enjoy.

My Project

We definitely need to have technology in the classroom. As our students are higher tech than their teachers, we, as teachers, need to keep up-to-date with the technologies. I feel we will be able to attach vivid pictures and video clips to the content and concepts that we need to teach to make the lessons more interesting. The students can store these visual images along with the vocabulary and hopefully retain this knowledge in the future.

There are some classrooms that are already equipped with projectors.

However, if we are given a room that does not have a projector, that class of students will suffer because the lessons are not as visual and interesting as they could be.
