Making a Library a Media Center Too!

My students need a laptop so that their school library may become a library media center in which they can learn research skills online.

My Students

Working for a Charter School means always having to do more with less. I am a librarian running a bare bones library. Parents have been wonderful about donating books but students cannot learn 21st century research skills without computers. We need 30 laptops, but that begins with one.

Our students come from all demographics.

Charter Schools are about school choice so we draw students from all over the city, regardless of socioeconomic status. We have children from Middle Eastern, Indian, Hispanic, Eastern European, African American, Asian, and European American families. We have children who live in poverty and those that live in comfort. We are a snapshot of America in the truest sense. Our school is Cambridge certified, which means we must offer a higher caliber of education to our students. Without a thriving school library program, we cannot meet this need.

My Project

For this, my first Donors Choose project, I ask for one Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E530 Laptop for our school library media center. The long term goal is to have 30 of these laptops so that students may go anywhere in the library and work on their research assignments. The Thinkpads will enable students to become experienced researchers and excel in information literacy. They will create multimedia presentations, research projects, and creative writing assignments using these resources. Our Library Program will become the hub of research education in the school. Without help, this cannot come to pass.

Once the laptops are in place, the students will receive a true 21st Century education which will enable them to become informed members of society and lifelong learners.

Without these technological resources, our library will remain a resource only for pleasure reading and some light research. We will not be able to teach research strategies and resource evaluation in a manner that is relevant to modern society.
