Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am an occupational therapist that works with students with special needs with diagnoses ranging from autism to cerebral palsy to developmental delays. The students I work with attend a school in a highly impoverished district where access to specialty items such as fine motor manipulatives and sensory toys are limited. My school specializes in working with preschoolers who have special needs and providing the early intervention that is critical to their success in their education. These children are curious and lovable and thrive on learning through play and exploration. Areas of fine motor, visual motor, and sensory processing are areas of difficulty for them that require a variety of special toys and therapy items that will improve their skills for better performance and participation in their school activities.
My Project
Each student participating in either distance-learning or in-person learning will receive their own container of fine motor and sensory items to increase safety while in school and to improve implementation of fine motor and sensory activities at home. The hole punchers, theraputty, and tongs all work on hand strength and finger movements to help establish a better grasp for pencils and scissors. The sensory balls help to provide a fidget toy for improving attention during directed activities. The wikki stix and markers are used to for pre-writing and tracing activities. These are commonly used items that improve motor skills and attention to task that children can no longer share or do not have in the home
