Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Before I was a teacher, I briefly worked in interior design and learnt first-hand the powerful psychological impact a setting can have. With texture, colour, and lighting, a space can feel either sterile and institutional or comfortable and inviting. This matters most in classrooms as the space informs the kind of learning that takes place.

This past year, my class was cold, utilitarian, and overwhelmingly brown; going into the new year, my goal is to change this.

Authentic learning is inherently vulnerable, requiring students to step into the unknown and trust the process. That type of vulnerability is especially difficult for my Freshman, who are often overwhelmed and anxious being in a new school surrounded by unfamiliar people. On top of that, I teach at a Title I school where the majority of students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and the additional barriers and societal pressures that come with it result in an environment where they are hesitant to let their guard down. I want to create a classroom that feels like a refuge, a space that invites and inspires, where students (and teachers!) are predisposed to, as Ms. Frizzle so famously states, "Take chances, make mistakes, and get messy!"

This project includes a little bit of everything: softer lighting alternatives to replace the harsh fluorescent lights; shelves and organizational tools to keep the space functional and clutter-free; window film to block the intense Texas sun and minimize distractions from the ongoing construction outside; floor cushions for flexible seating, craft supplies for interactive projects—and so much more.

If I want my class to feel like a family, then my classroom needs to feel like a home. Thank you for helping to support this goal!
