My Students

Do you remember your first piggy bank? The satisfaction you had when you read your savings goal? I want to teach my students the importance of financial literacy through play. I want them to learn what financial literacy means. I want them to understand that people get paid for doing a job.

My students are energetic and fun-loving.

They are curious and want to come to school with smiles on their face every day, despite their hardships. They live in and attend school in the inner-city. They live in the most modest of ways. They seldom have the opportunity to venture out of their neighborhood, and many, if not all, have never even touched a sandy beach despite living 15 miles away. All of my students live below the poverty line. They all qualify for federally funded lunches. They spend long hours at school and due to gang violence spend most of their free time indoors.

My Project

I am requesting paper money and Lakeshore Classroom Money Kit to set up a classroom bank where students will earn money weekly according to how well they completed assignments, how well they behaved, and if they were in attendance in class all week. I want it to mirror what holding a job. Students will earn classroom money and will be able to spend their earnings on needs and wants. Students will also be taxed or ticketed if they are off task or fail to follow school rules. I want students to learn that money is earned and that one must be responsible with money in order to be financially stable. In addition, I am also requesting Reading for Dollars! Challenge Game - Gr. 2 as a fun way to have students earn additional money. In addition, I am also requesting a Classroom Laminating Machine. This machine will be used to laminate the above mentioned paper money to ensure that it does not tear or Students will be taught that real currency goes through multiple exchanges.

Please help me teach my students through play about financial literacy.

For many 7 years they only know that money come from an atm. They do not understand that their parents have to hold a job to earn that money. Many think that the bank just give you all the money you need. It is hard for them at this age to understand that you can only take out of the bank they money you put in. Please help my students be financially literate.
