My Students
My 2nd Graders enjoy browsing our classroom library. I want to be sure that our library is filled with a wide variety of high-interest books, especially high-interest informational text!
My school is in a close knit community.
The students who attend my school come from a wide variety of home lives. Almost 75% of the little ones who attend my school are identified as low-income. Unfortunately, many of my students have few to no books at home. As their 2nd Grade teacher, I want to make sure I can provide them with a wide variety of reading materials when they are at school in our classroom. I cannot change their home lives, but I can change their school lives. I want to change their school lives for the better!
My Project
I want to keep our classroom library up to date with a wide variety of multi-leveled books and informational texts. Doing this will allow my 2nd Graders to be exposed to the appropriate reading materials for their literacy success. Our school district is now mandating the Daily 5 literacy program. During the Daily 5, my 2nd Graders will be taking part in Read to Self and Read to Somebody. These two rotations are essential in a child's literacy foundational skills. When they take part in these rotations, they will obviously need books to read. I want to be sure that my classroom library is filled with enough books for each child to read.
Being able to add high-interest books to our classroom library will provide my 2nd Graders with sufficient resources that will guide them in a positive direction in regards to lifelong literacy.
Reading is essential to a child's educational success and a person's lifelong success. I want to be sure that my 2nd Graders can build positive reading habits at school in hopes that those habits will turn into lifelong habits.
