Our school is located in a densely-populated urban area. Most of my students receive free or reduced lunch. We are one of the only schools in the city to provide free, public, single-sex education. Because of this, many of my students travel very far by public transportation to attend the school.
My students inspire me daily with their eagerness to learn.
They love to sing, move, and learn everything they can. They enjoy discovering music from around the world and in many different genres. I want to provide them with an outstanding music education, and that includes having high-quality materials to support my instruction.
My Project
What's the first thing a child wants to do when she sees a room full of instruments? Make some noise! We have a small collection of instruments in the music room, and my students have gotten really good at taking turns of sharing. However, there are many instruments in the world that they still have not experienced.
This year I want to expand my students' sound vocabulary by playing new percussion instruments.
I would like to provide them with a variety of sounds from many cultures: cabasa, finger cymbals, vibraslap, and more. If we add these to our repertoire, we will get to play music from other cultures, create tone poems, and create soundscapes for books.
