Makey Makey Music Lab: Hands-On STEM through Sound and Code

Help me give my students Makey Makey kits, microphones, headphone splitters and USB hubs to give students real, interactive access to music technology and STEM career pathways through the use of coding and unconventional music making/instrument building.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Bilotta's classroom raised $996

My Project

Students will explore STEM concepts through music technology by hands-on activities like coding music, building DIY instruments, and experimenting with sound science — all while discovering exciting careers in audio engineering, coding, and music production.

This project is will go beyond students just listening to music, but actively creating it through the use of technology, coding and engineering principles but in an unconventional way.

With your support, we will transform our classroom into a Music Technology Makerspace where students engage in hands-on STEM learning through sound.

Students will use tools like Makey Makey kits, MIDI controllers, microphones and music coding platforms like EarSketch to design their own electronic instruments, code original beats, and explore the physics of sound waves. This creative approach brings STEM subjects like computer science, physics, and engineering to life in an engaging, relevant way through the use of technology. We will even make musical instruments out of every-day, ordinary objects.

Through projects like building musical circuits from everyday objects and programming music with code, students will develop computational thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills. Imagine a bunch of bananas, coded specifically to be able to be played as a piano! They will also dive deeply into exploring career pathways in the booming field of music technology—such as sound engineering, software development, and audio production. Students will get hands-on, practical experience exploring those career paths through this project.

This project will especially benefit students who might not otherwise see themselves as "STEM people" by connecting technology with music, something many students are passionate about. The makerspace will be a dynamic, inclusive environment where creativity and STEM learning merge.

Your generous support will provide materials and technology needed for students to explore, create, and innovate—making STEM learning an exciting adventure that sparks curiosity and builds skills for the future.
