Makerspace Projects for Distance Learning

My Students

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, all of my students have had challenges with distance learning. Not being in the classroom, many students struggled with a lack of supplies and a lack of support. Without the in-school, personal instruction to ensure students access the curriculum, students have had varying degrees of success during distance learning and have spent a lot of time on electronic devices.

My Project

These wood and acrylic panels will allow us to utilize our school laser cutter to prefabricate and create kits to be sent home with students for distance learning projects. Kits made from these materials will allow students to continue with designing, building and engineering at home. Students will also have opportunities to develop their creative and problem solving skills when approaching the STEAM challenges in these distance learning kits as they go through the process of experimenting, testing and failing.

These kits will provide all students with the supplies for STEAM activities at home and provide some balance to their time on devices.

Kits will be designed for students to utilize the laser cut pieces to explore balance and strength; building and testing structures for buildings, bridges and sculptures. Students will experience engaging hands-on learning and success with these kits, in addition to some variation from the paper/pencil and computer-based assignments of distance learning.
