My Students

When you walk into our classroom, it does not look like the classrooms of 10 years ago. Students have flexible seating so you'll see students sitting on the floor or on yoga balls. Each student has their own Chromebook to use as a tool in their education. All of this is to prepare them for their future!

My twenty-eight fourth graders are full of energy and ask a lot of questions.

Our school is over 70% free and reduced lunch with a high mobility rate of students moving in and out. My 12 girls and 16 boys love to come to school because it is a safe, consistent place. However, due to their home lives our school teaches so much more than math and reading, but also problem-solving skills and career readiness.

My Project

We requested K'Nex education roller coaster sets and snap circuit sets to be the first pieces in our Makerspace. Students who complete maker-space projects create real-world things. In order to see a project to its completion they often have to overcome challenges. Two large units in fourth grade are electricity & circuits and force & motion. We are sparking interest in the fields of science, math, and engineering to help our students dream big for their future beyond fast food. Our Makerspace will be another tool to help struggling students see the value of their classroom work - why it's relevant and how it shakes out in a tangible way. Students will use these items in connection to our units to build a working circuit and roller coaster but will also explore them in Makerspace time to take it one step further.

Right now the only supplies in our Makerspace are recyclables.

While great, it makes it difficult to see tangible success of a working circuit without electricity. These supplies will grow our Makerspace significantly and really increase student interest in our force & motion and electricity & circuit study. Right now, my students typically see their future careers as ones in fast food or making minimum wage. I want them to see their potential and use problem solving skills.
