My Students
The joy of teaching 6th graders is hearing their off-the wall ideas. Their imaginations run a mile a minute, and they are constantly coming up with new ideas and inventions. However, most of their ideas are stuck in the dreaming phase. They need supplies to make some of their ideas a reality.
My students are 6th graders at a Title I Middle School and come from a wide range of backgrounds.
Many of them come from poverty and have little access to technology outside of school.
They love to dream big and aren't afraid to take risks. Most importantly, they have a passion for anything they set their minds to, and they aren't afraid to explore the farthest reaches of their imaginations'.
My Project
The materials provided will jump start our classroom Maker Space. A Maker Space is a space/time each day where students will be able to explore/create anything their imagination can come up with. A fully stocked Maker Space will provide them with resources and inspiration to create whatever they can dream up.
Through their explorations they will learn the basics of electricity, circuitry, and some basic computer coding. They will use this new knowledge to create everything from miniature robots to their own electronic board games. If they can dream it, we can figure out a way to create it.
Most importantly, they will learn teamwork, collaboration, and problem solving skills. Through their projects they will develop perseverance and a sense of accomplishment.
This project will give the students an opportunity to accomplish things they never thought were possible.
They will use new technologies they never thought they could master. And ultimately they will come back fired up and ready to tackle their next project.
