Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our sweet students come from diverse backgrounds and bring a large array of experiences to our classrooms and school. One thing they all have in common is using their imaginations and creating a happy world within our walls.
Daily, our students overcome a variety of basic challenges - getting breakfast, making it to school, having homework completed.
Our school is a Title I urban school with the most diverse population in our district. Over 80% of our students qualify to receive free or reduced-price lunch. School becomes a safe haven for these scholars - where expectations are the same every day, and their basic needs are met. While they come to school to learn, they thrive when they are given the opportunity to utilize a variety of resources to make learning real and fun. This is what keeps them coming back and keeps them hooked into learning the rigorous academic standards.
My Project
Each year, I look for new opportunities and ideas to expand my students' learning and to make our classroom innovative and exciting. In 2020, I am going to add a Maker Space in our room. I will make a space where students will visit once a week to create, engineer, and explore. Using resources from Teachers Pay Teachers, and the book Purposeful Play, I hope to create activities that will allow students to learn through play and discovery. Activities will include making paper airplanes and testing flight distance, decorating sock puppets to use on a green screen app to make a movie, creating a chain reaction with dominoes or a marble maze, and many more ideas that will inspire organic learning in the classroom! My students need dot markers, headphones for iPad apps, and paper to have a successful Maker Space in our classroom! Storage items such as pencil boxes, folders, and storage boxes will help us create a space that can move around our classroom and make sure that all students have what they need to be successful.
It is always exciting to see a child learn something new - but even more exciting to see them learn it in a discovery based format!
This space and lessons will allow my students to learn using a variety of tools and techniques, practice how to work collaboratively, and how to build on their own discoveries. This is an exciting way for them to develop critical thinking skills in a way that won't seem like learning at all!
