This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students come from a very low income community where parents cannot afford to provide costumes for students and the school has no budget allocation for a play production.

The first thing they always ask me when they find out we are doing a play is, "What are the costumes going to be?" They are most excited about the costumes when it comes to performing in a play.

Having costumes really helps them to get into their character and make the story come alive.

This is their 3rd year having a theatre program and excitement for acting has been rising. I usually have about 90% of the students in 3rd and 4th grade audition for the play. Last year, the school production was truly the highlight of the year, not only for the performers, but the audience as well. For many of these students, it was their first time seeing a live performance, let alone performing in one.

They don't have a lot of opportunities for creative expression in or outside of school. Being in a play where they learn public speaking, collaboration, and professionalism, is so essential to their development.
