My Students
My students love their library and love reading. They are in and out all day long, sometimes because they need a new read, and sometimes just to be there because it's their happy place. So many of my students have said that they want to work in a library when they grow up, and that they feel happy and comfortable there. My favorite thing to hear from my students is "Ms. M., I had a hard day so I just had to come to the library." I love that it is their safe place! Now, I want to make it more appealing and accessible.
My Project
I am asking for bins so that my readers will be able to feast their eyes on the beautiful books that we have. I begged, borrowed, and stole to get enough bins for a small section of my library to be moved into bins, and my students have discovered so many new books to love.
I would like to use bins in more of the high traffic areas that are most used by my youngest students.
Pets, wind animals, graphic novels, and Mo Willems books are all areas where they love to shop for books, but have a hard time finding what they are looking for. Our shelving system is difficult for little hands to navigate and bins will make navigation easier, in addition to the increased visual appeal.
I spend a lot of time developing my collection: comparing prices across multiple vendors to get the best prices, attending book conferences to learn about the latest and greatest new books, and visiting bookstores and public libraries to stay in the loop. I have the books organized in a way the the students know and understand, and want to make it more appealing and easy to use.
