The children who attend our school in Bedford-Stuyvesant are inquisitive and avid learners. They are the definition of true grit and perseverance. They all persist and push to achieve academic benchmarks although they are faced with a speech and language delay. The tenacity of my speech and language students is remarkable as I have a front row seat in watching them all work towards attaining their IEP goals. My speech students have benefitted in the past from the DonorsChoose platform, and we still utilized the materials from a project funded from March 26th, 2015 until COVID-19 forced the closure of NYC public schools. My students love attending speech and since we have closed, we used all the materials at our fingertips. We now need to reimplement programming with a bang. COVID-19, gave me as a clinician the opportunity to research a new method of administering services that is still being researched and investigated. I tend to lend input and research to this growing field of incorporating cutting edge technology and introducing it on a therapy platform that has kids represented from all backgrounds included in the sample to determine its effectiveness for ALL children.
My Project
Virtual Reality and Immersive Technology have been proven effective and efficacious in providing an alternate means of providing speech therapy. While this method won’t be used solely, research has demonstrated a heightened sense of goal attainment, particularly used in conjunction with traditional treatment methods. Children on the spectrum and with dyslexia have proven to be advantageous when utilizing software that targets pragmatically, social situations and scenarios where being immersed gives real life skills without the real life consequences. This level of remediation also provides incentive for children’s participation and motivates them to learn with software geared for phonological awareness, vocabulary development and receptive skills such as following directions and enhancing auditory memory. This year will prove advantageous with this new device in our speech artillery.
We will use the headsets to introduce social and pragmatic scenarios.
While using the VR headset, students will utilize immersive technology software that exposes them and bombards them with phoneme and graphemes correspondence as well as initial sound identification, rhyming, syllables and other phonological awareness take. My students with auditory processing disorders will also benefit as there is software that will motivate them to follow directions with increasing linguistic complexity.
