My Students
Our school is a Title I school, located in a small, rural county. Our classrooms are filled with a diverse makeup of students that include English Language Learners, students with disabilities, and gifted students.
Our students are very eager to learn, and they come to school excited for a new day.
Most of our students come from low-income households where there are limited budgets for school materials and supplies; however, their families are very supportive and very involved our school community!
My Project
My students are so excited about starting the new school year! In order to have a successful year, they need to master the grade level math standards. Some students have a difficult time understanding concepts, such as vocabulary, place value, regrouping, and problem solving. If they don't feel confident in the classroom, it is often reflected in their academic performance.
I am requesting learning activities and manipulatives that will help my visual and kinesthetic learners better understand math vocabulary, place value, regrouping, and problem solving.
The vocabulary cards will make it easier to understand the meanings of math terms by providing a visual representation as well as a related body motion to help them remember the definition. The place value dry erase boards and interlocking base ten blocks will allow my students to practice place value concepts. This year, some of my students are being introduced to multiplication and division with regrouping. The long division dry erase boards and the hands-on multiplication and division regrouping kits will allow them to visualize this process and gain a better understanding. Some students have a difficult time determining the correct operation to solve a word problem. The problem solving journals will give students space to practice drawing a representation of the word problem and write about the process they used to solve the problem. With these engaging materials, my students will feel more confident in the classroom, which will then be reflected in their academic performance!
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
