Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The amazing students at my school come from high poverty homes. We are a large school with a lot of grade-level integration. Our students are caring and try their best despite the odds stacked against them. My U.S. History classroom has 4 classes of about 30 students, but our population is very transient, so this number is most likely going to change. Many of my students are English language learners.
All of our students receive free lunch.
These 7th graders are creative, silly, and love to try new things. However, many of my students are struggling readers which can cause problems for them in history. Because of these deficits, I am always looking for new, innovative ways to help my students grow and succeed!
My Project
Diversity is minimally present in the American history curriculum which makes it very hard for my students to relate to. The students who come into my class come from all walks of life and contribute so much but my school does not have the resources to be able to take my students to places where we can learn more about what makes us all Americans, no matter where we came from.
With a Google Expedition VR Kit, I will be able to take my students around the world on virtual field trips right in our classroom.
This summer, I attended a workshop where I learned how to take 360 images and videos to build a virtual field trip using Google Street View and Google Tours. This kit will allow me to use what I learned to make the most out of my lessons. A way for these virtual trips to be more effective, my students will conduct a project where the research where their family came from. They will use the kit to explore those locations and create their own Google Tour. With your support, my students will be able to learn about their past and present and how it unites us all.
