My Students

Kindergarten has changed! No longer is it naptime and snacks. Instead, it is reading and thinking about books! The challenge for today's kindergarten teacher is to keep learning fun and teach kindergartners to learn to read at the same time.

My group of 25 kindergartners are ready....ready to embrace the magical world of kindergarten.

Their minds are open, their learning like a sponge, and their energy is through the roof. In my classroom, we have already established that we are all readers - whether it be reading their name, environmental print, letters, words, or even books - we can all read! The fire has been lit and now we want to read anything and everything we can get our hands on. The more books, the better!

My Project

Emergent storybooks (also called "Old Favorites") are based on the research by Elizabeth Sulzby. A carefully selected text is introduced during read aloud time. After hearing the story read aloud several times, multiple copies become available for students to "read" during independent reading. Emergent storybooks have a strong, sequential storyline, clear illustrations that reflect the text-- a story children can relate to and be a book loved by the teacher because it will be read and listened to many times. When students read the text, they are acting out the story, remembering the repeating lines, and thinking about the characters. Getting multiple copies of books is tricky, but necessary for the students to embark and be successful into the journey of reading. The titles I have selected with be read over and and over by students this year and every year. I am requesting multiple copies of beloved books such as: Corduroy, Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, Caps for Sale and more!

My class decided on the class name The Wizards of "Awe"some this year because they know that learning is magic.

They also know "There's no place like school." Teaching reading in kindergarten is magical. To watch young minds be able to decode the words, but also think about the text in deeper ways coincides with the new Common Core Standards being implemented in 2014. Reading emergent storybooks is the foundation for which other reading units is based on. Help us to work some magic!
