Make Reading Great Again

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. The majority of my students are being raised in single family households and receive free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Often, my students are required to take care of younger siblings and take on the role of the other parent. I want to expose my middle school students to books that they can relate too. Books that show them that they can overcome any challenge that is thrown their way. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience inside my classroom. I want my students to use books as an outlet and even help them through difficulties they face day to day.

My Project

My goal as a language arts educator is to foster an environment that creates a love for reading and writing. However, I cannot do that without rich authentic texts that my students will be INTERESTED in and can RELATE to. So many times growing up I read books given by teachers that I just was not interested in. I, unfortunately, did not get the best out of the class and felt like my time was wasted. My students' interests and needs are important to me and I want to feel like they are being heard. I chose these books because THEY CHOSE them. After researching many young adult books these are a few that my diverse and excited student body selected as books they want to read moving forward. We are excited about reading our new books and I hope that you can help us achieve our goal. Thank you in advance!
