My Project

I teach in a high school resource room, where most of my students face significant challenges with reading. Many of them read well below grade level, and for some, reading has become a source of frustration rather than enjoyment. When I stepped into this role, I inherited four bookshelves full of books. While I was grateful for the collection, I quickly realized that most of the books were outdated and written at reading levels far above what my students could access independently.

I want to create a classroom library that reflects the needs and interests of my students — one that offers books they can truly engage with.

I envision a space filled with high-interest, low-reading-level books, graphic novels, diverse characters, and stories that mirror my students’ lived experiences. I want them to have choices — books about sports, mysteries, fantasy, nonfiction, humor — whatever makes them want to turn the page.

My goal is simple but powerful: I want my students to discover that reading can be enjoyable. I believe that when students are given access to books that meet them where they are and reflect who they are, they begin to see themselves as readers. I want to transform reading from a task they are forced to do into an activity they choose to do — for fun, for escape, for learning, and for growth.

Updating our classroom library is more than just a cosmetic change; it’s an investment in student engagement, confidence, and literacy. With the right books, I believe we can change how students view reading — and how they view themselves.
