it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My project is to support my Alternate Curriculum high school students in strengthening their phonetic reading skills, using a researched based, systematic, multisensory paper and pencil workbook series. Explode the Code allows teachers to provide direct phonics instruction to students in small groups, while providing high quality materials for students to use to generalize the skills they are learning.
Help make learning these all important reading skills engaging and self-reinforcing for our diverse group of students.
We are a Title I school. Our three Alternate Curriculum classrooms have students with moderate to extensive support needs, with intellectual disabilities, autism, and/or multiple disabilities.
The “Explode the Code,” workbooks are incredibly visual and give students who are learning on the alternate curriculum the support to work as independently as possible. The series starts at the most basic letter name and sound level, and progresses gradually, with a slow building of skills. Students have a sense of accomplishment as they see their progress across the series.
Research shows that physically writing letters and words is associated with learning and remembering at a deeper level.
Explode the Code provides our students with a multisensory, non-computer based activity to focus their attention on. For our students who need the most support, the Handwriting without Tear workbooks have an added emphasis on letter formation, while still emphasizing phonetic letter sound correspondence.
