I teach in a city school where the diverse student population is mostly made up of students from lower socio-economic classes. The school population is largely made up of ELL (English Language Learners) and most qualify for free or reduced price lunches.
Many students' houses or apartments are in locations where it is unsafe to play outside, or the kids do not have adequate adult supervision.
Most students do not get a lot of opportunities to play or move unless they are at school. They need opportunities both inside the classroom and throughout the day to keep their bodies moving!
My Project
Each day the kids at our school walk around at recess time with very little to do or play with. They are always asking for more balls and games. Because they ask, we try to provide some things. Unfortunately, there is very small budget allotted to purchase new and replacement gear for recess time. Sadly, I hear multiple students complaining most every day that they have nothing to play with. Knowing this, I asked them to tell me what they would like to have at recess time. The students compiled a wish list of gear consisting of soccer balls, basketballs, kick balls, baseball gear, and more. I know that with these supplies, the students can be active the entire recess! They would get their hour of physical fitness each day for sure!
