Make Our Day with Clay!

My Students

Our school has a robust reputation regarding the quality ceramic work we've produced over the years, but each year, we must raise enough money to restock our supply of ceramics materials so that the next class of artists has the same opportunity to experience the satisfaction of working with clay.

Look out for my art students in the future because they are sure to hit the art scene with some innovative and skilled work soon!

Our supportive school community inspires our diverse group of PS-5th graders to welcome challenges and take creative risks with their learning. Every year I am blow away with my students' ability to master advanced technical skills in art. The level of talent and motivation grows with every year, and I can't wait to see what this group of students is ready for me to throw at them this year!

My Project

This will be the second year our 4th grade students will be embarking on our 10 week African Face Jug unit. These students will hand build large ceramic vessels to better understand the cultural traditions of many African people as they were brought to America illegally during the slave trade. In 5th grade, we will begin a new ceramic unit asking students to dive deep into their conceptual understanding of how 3D forms in clay, particularly drinking vessels, can be constructed with an individual recipient in mind. Our youngest students will engage with clay by learning the basics—coil, slab, and pinch construction—as well as figure making. Working with clay for the first time will allow them to experience the forgivable nature of this tactile medium.

Working with clay in our school art studio excites students about learning because it is a material they don't often get the opportunity to work with outside of a studio setting.

Not all of our students have the means to attend an after school program or summer camp in order to work with clay. That's why I aim to provide the opportunity for all students to build, fire, and glaze their work like a real artist during their public school education.
