My Students
Using scissors, the ability to be still for extended periods of time, and verbal communication, are skills that many of us take for granted. The materials I am requesting will give my students a way to access these basic skills.
My students attend a public school as part of a low-incidence disabilities cluster program.
My students with severe-profound cognitive impairments are eager to work but often need a lot of assistance and attention to participate in many classroom activities.
My Project
I am requesting several kinds of adaptive scissors, a set of talker buttons that will literally give my students a voice, wikki stix to give them a more kinesthetic way to practice forming letters, and seat cushions to keep my students seated and focused longer. The items I am requesting will help my students participate in our classroom and function more independently in a variety of ways.
Adaptive scissors will allow them to more independently complete tasks and art projects involving cutting.
Some of my students have a hard time staying seated during circle time. The seat cushions will allow my students to move around a bit during circle time without distracting their peers.
The buttons will give my students a way to ask for help or show me their work without screaming or getting out of their seats. I will record messages and place appropriate pictures such as "help please!" or "finished!" on each button that my students can press to communicate when working independently.
These seemingly small tools will have a big impact on my students because these tools will help them spend more time working independently.
This in turn will help my students reach their larger goals in and outside of my classroom.
