My students need a rug, easel and storage shelves! Help Ms. B transform an old teacher's lounge into a functional classroom for students with Special Needs!!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Why is your class so small Miss?!" A daily question I receive from several students who walk by tiny resource room 12A. The class was once part of a teacher lounge and now is a small 12 ft by 20 ft classroom that shares an entrance with the class next door & has no light switch in the classroom.
My students are high-spirited, hard working 5th graders who are on IEPS with disabilities ranging from learning disabilities to intellectual disabilities.
They value the importance of working hard to get smart but need the physical aspects of a room that can provide organization for them and a venue for them to see their progress.
As students in a low-income community, they face challenges every day, however they are ready to learn each time they walk through the door of a classroom that was created by erecting walls within a teachers lounge, the result: a large teacher lounge, a small room for English Language Learners, and 12A- the 5th grade special education resource room. The ELL students actually do not have a door to their room and have to enter through our classroom (a daily distraction, however we work with what we got!); there is no light switch in my classroom, in order to watch videos or use the overhead properly, I have to shut the lights to all three rooms.
My Project
The physical make of the room is challenging and even though the students are such hard workers that can tackle any challenge, they deserve a functioning classroom. We can not control the entrances or light fixtures, but we can add equipment that will make the small classroom more practical and organized, just as any classroom should be!
We are requesting:
1. A bookshelf that will house many books that are currently stacked in boxes under desks to save space. The small bookshelf in our room is overflowing
2. A small easel for small group instruction
3. A File and Store Mobile Cart to hold student's IEP and important documents
4. A small rug that will give this small classroom a cozy feel and a place for students to feel comfortable to read and gather for community circles to discuss group progress
5. Pendaflex vertical files; even though we don't have floor space we can use the walls. These files will hold work for students to improve their skills in math, reading, and writing.
All students deserve a functional classroom.
Even though there is not a lot of floor space, the organizational tools requested will transform lessons and organization for students. Help us use the equipment requested to help students use a small space in the best way possible.
