This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
High school can be scary! Although we read a lot of challenging texts, I like my students to be able to express their creativity too. It shows them that I value more than just their ability to read and write. And really, glitter just makes everything better!
My students live in an area of New York with an 80% poverty rate.
They experience or witness abuse, neglect, abandonment, teen pregnancy, gang violence, and drug abuse. Some are living in shelters or foster care. Despite all the challenges they face, they are eager learners and want to succeed in life. The vision of our school is for each student to attend college. For most of my students, they will be the first in their families to accomplish this dream.
My Project
Our recently completed Romeo & Juliet unit is an example of incorporating art into the curriculum. In addition to writing an argumentative paper on who was to blame for the deaths of Romeo & Juliet, students chose a hand-on project. Some the most popular choices were building and labeling the Globe Theater, researching Elizabethan clothing and drawing costumes for the characters, designing thematic quilts, and creating a Shakespearean newspaper (okay, if done realistically this would not require glitter, but in actuality, it is the #1 glitter killer). These art supplies will enable my students express their creativity in a way that will enrich their knowledge and experience.
You can make the ninth grade a little less scary for my students.
Bringing art and hand-on projects into the curriculum engages the students more in what we are learning. Please bring some much needed sparkle into their lives!
