My Students
I am very fortunate to have an amazing group of students. Their insatiable thirst for knowledge is what inspires me to seek out innovative ways to make learning in our classroom entertaining and meaningful. What I love most about them is their inquisitiveness and eagerness to learn new things. They love anything dealing with STEAM and project days are intense.
Our school is Title I with 95% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch.
In spite of having limited materials at school and limited resources in the area where they live, they are always happy to come to school and embrace those challenges as a driving force to do their best.
My Project
Prodigy math is an interactive website that engages students while teaching them the math skills for the 21st century. Trying to get 6th grade students to want to practice their math skills independently is sometimes a challenge, especially when working with fractions, decimals, and percents. However, this site has so many incentives that they cannot help but want to complete more battles to level-up and catch more mythical creatures.
Another great feature is that math skills addressed in assignments can be timed to appear exactly when those topics are covered in class and disappear when those lessons are over.
Students have no overt knowledge of what those skills are because they are invisibly integrated into the gameplay. They learn math as they play and cannot progress until it is mastered. Because of this, the gameplay can be used for both formative and summative assessments.
