Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students have an extended school day and an extended school year. They are taught the Common Core standards through a vigorous and rounded curriculum. Every student takes math, science, English, history, physical education, and enrichment. Students participate in a variety of extracurricular opportunities and events throughout the year, including clubs. Moreover, the majority of our students attend our after-school program to get homework help and tutoring.
Due to the pandemic, our students will be working mostly from home.
Our students come to school in an open and caring environment. We celebrate learning and success in our school. They are so eager to come to school every day. I just want them to get what they came for--an excellent education (even from home)!
My Project
This has been a very trying year for all of us. Teaching and learning are now virtual, bringing many challenges for everyone involved. As a teacher, I have to use all my tools and resources to make learning interesting, engaging, and authentic for my students. As a reflective teacher, I know that when something doesn't work, it is time for a change. My school is doing the best they can to provide me and my fellow teachers with resources to provide our scholars with a high-quality education. However, I have to do everything I can to keep lessons engaging and fun for them.
A digital subscription to BrainPop and BrainPop Jr will help me engage my students further during their virtual learning.
BrainPop is a great resource for supplementing the curriculum. The animated mini video clips are so full of rich academic language but it is kid-friendly. BrainPOP videos are great for introducing new concepts. My student will have access to all videos, activities, and quizzes. These activities will help students process information and the quizzes access their grasp or mastery of the topic or concept.
Kids need visuals, especially videos, but some of the material online is not age-appropriate or kid-friendly. These are standard-based mini-lessons that will help all my students, particularly my English Language Learners and my students in Special Education. I'm so excited to see all of them build their vocabulary and knowledge on so many topics!
