Make My Day, Learn With Clay

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Sitting on my shelf at home is a clay head I made when I was in third grade. I still remember how proud I was of my work. My mother kept it for years. I want my students to feel that same kind of pride in their accomplishments. With clay, they can create a work of art to be cherished forever.

I teach in a dual immersion (Spanish/English) third grade classroom in California.

In our area, the majority school aged population is now Hispanic. Half of my students are native English speakers and half of them are native Spanish speakers. Our goal is to have children leave our school bilingual, boltered and bicollateral. Most of my students come from a Mexican or El Salvadorean background, both cultures with a rich heritage in the arts. However, most of my students don't have the opportunity to experience this culture first hand. They cannot afford art classes at the local studios and the school no longer provides these enrichment activities. I would like to help give them a broader range of experiences in the arts, starting with clay!

My Project

We will use the clay and clay accessories to work on several different projects. My students will learn how to pinch a pot, work with a slab and create works of art. They will learn techniques for putting pieces together. They will see how their pieces look before and after they have been fired. The culminating project is to make a hanging planter to take home (plant included). It is important for students at this age (and any age) to experience new medium and to push their comfort zone. Clay is a perfect medium for this. It is forgiving (squish it and start again) but the end results can be very satisfying and will last a long time.

I am lucky that I have a volunteer, a ceramics artist who is will to come in over the course of the school year to work with my students.

Together we will be able to provide an enriching activity that could change the way some of my students view the world.
