Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 1st grade in a high needs public inner city neighborhood. 90% of our students qualify for free lunch.
Math is a difficult subject for my students to grasp. Many come from low economic households and do not hear a lot of important vocabulary that helps build understanding. They just don't have a lot of exposure to many concepts. I would like to find a way to make math exciting by connecting it to situations that they can easily understand. Math literature is a great way to do that.
It would make a world of difference to have a math library for my classroom! I found an excellent collection of storybooks that will connect perfectly with our first grade curriculum. My children will be able to grasp fundamental math concepts and make the progress they need.
Please help me bring math alive to my students through children's literature.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
