My school is a dual language immersion school that focuses students by offering instructions through constructivist approach. Students receive their language assignment in kindergarten in either French, Spanish, or Mandarin. Math and Science are taught in the target language while Social Studies and Reader and Writer's workshops in English. Students come from a very diverse background and most have zero experience in the target language. Some have traveled around the world, but some come from working class families and receive free or reduced lunch. Our goal is to create globally minded citizens who are critical thinkers and problem solvers.
My Project
Our students are always eager to learn. Texts that are relevant and engaging are something the classroom will never have enough of. As a Mandarin immersion teacher, I have to prepare shared reading texts to teach sentence stem and vocabulary words. Many times, shared reading is the bridge between reading and Math or Science. Read aloud texts are what bring stories alive. I would love to share the beauty of many authors' voices and stories that are imaginative.
The projector and the bluetooth speaker will also bring native speakers from around the world into the classroom.
Since there are no Mandarin native speakers outside of my classroom, it is critical that the students become accustomed to the accents from other Mandarin speakers from other regions.
