I am a first-year teacher in a six-student classroom in District 75, New York City's special education district for students with severe disabilities. I am teaching on the newly renovated fifth floor of my school, which means a beautiful but bare classroom. I buy or make all my materials myself. My students would benefit greatly from a laminator and laminating pouches in order to preserve the materials I make and make them more accessible to students. Students with autism, such as the ones I teach, learn best using hands-on supplies and visual materials such as picture symbols. A laminator and laminating pouches would allow me to reinforce our visual schedules, flashcards, calendars, job boards, and many other materials that help my students transition from one activity to another, learn reading and math skills, and simply communicate.
